Accepting counter offers can be risky!

by CareerMVP.com

So, you've gotten the job offer you want from a new employer. Now, your current company comes back with a better offer to keep you. Should you take the counter offer? While this is a personal decision and every situation is different, you better think long and hard about accepting the counter offer. You have sent the message to your employer that you are willing to leave and are not loyal to the company. Your employer might be keeping you until they find your replacement. Then they can "phase you out" with your replacement. This way, they have zero downtime. Meanwhile, you've lost your chance with the potential employer who made you the offer and the recruiter, if one is involved.

Using new offers for the sole purpose of negotiating with your current employer.
If you're using offers from other companies as a way to just negotiate a higher salary with your current employer, you're playing with fire. Furthermore, you're being unethical because you're wasting the time and resources of the potential employer and recruiting firm, if one is involved. If you do this, expect for it to come back and bite you at some point in your career. As we mentioned above, your employer is going to know that you are not loyal. Think about what would happen if your current employer and the potential employer merged. More importantly, you will likely never know how this hurts you and your career. But the one certainty is that you will never be able to go back to that employer or recruiter.

So, you didn't mean to use it as a negotiating tool?
That's fine. But, you should really think about this scenario before you even search for a job. Make sure you are serious about leaving and have exhausted all resources in renogiating with the company. Don't look for a job unless you're serious about leaving.
